FAQs
We do not send out runner packs. There will be an opportunity to collect your number and electronic chip from the race village marquee on Saturday 11th May 2024 between 12.30 and 15.00. This will be by the front lawn at Dalkeith Palace. You can also pick your race number up on Sunday morning from 8.00, but we do encourage as many people as possible to pick up the number on Saturday.
If you can only pick up your number and chip on the morning please arrive in good time. Last time everyone seemed to arrive at once about an hour before the start! We will make every effort to avoid queues by having a bigger registration crew, but please help us by arriving as early as possible.

Ticks
Although we have not had any tick sighting whilst running the trail this year, please be wary of long grasses or veering off course. We have ensured that trail paths are clear and please stick to the middle of the path to be safe. For more information on ticks, preventative measures and removal, see this blog: runningforthehills.com/ticks-and-trail-running

Venue and Facilities
Will there be changing facilities?
Please arrive on the morning as prepared as possible. We can't provide showers but we will provide a small unisex marquee in which you can change into your gear and safely drop off your bag.
Is there somewhere I can leave my bag?
Yes. We will have a bag drop tent in which you can leave your bag. Your race number will have a tear off baggage tag. Pull it off and attach it visibly to your bag before handing it in. Bags are reclaimed by showing your race number.
Will there be car parking close by?
Yes just a few metres from the start and finish line there will be ample parking. Once in the Country Park follow the signs for Race Car Parking. All traffic has to come in via the Town Gate entrance as Kings Gate entrance near Sheriff Hall roundabout will be closed until 12.30 to assist the event routes. Please arrive early.
How do I get to Dalkeith? Are there public transport links?
By car
Dalkeith Country Park is easy to get to from the Edinburgh city bypass. Take the exit for Dalkeith from the Sheriffhall Roundabout on to Old Dalkeith Road. Go straight on at the roundabout on to Edinburgh Road and turn left on to Dalkeith High Street. Off the High Street you can enter Dalkeith Country Park by the Town Gate entrance. Please note that the Kings Gate entrance will be closed until 12.30
On foot
The best entrance if you’re walking is Town Gate
By bus
If you’re coming from Edinburgh city centre take Lothian Buses 3, or 33 from Edinburgh to Dalkeith. From Musselburgh, catch the number 140 East Coast bus or the 49. From Bonnyrigg take the 39 bus or the 140 East Coast. Both take you to the Corn Exchange Bus Stop on Dalkeith High Street and you can walk from here.
By train
You can also use the new Borders’ Railway to get to Dalkeith Country Park. There are regular trains from the Borders and Edinburgh City Centre to Dalkeith’s Eskbank Station on Westfield Park. You can then walk from here (25 minutes) or get a bus from Tescos to Dalkeith.

Running
Do I need to be really fit to take part?
You don't need to be really fit to take part but trail running does require a basic level of fitness. If you have not run before then we would recommend you check out the Jog Scotland link above and get involved in a group near you!
What should I wear?
Trail shoes or running shoes with good grip.
What age do I need to be to take part?
1K Trail Run (Not yet attending high school age) (children aged 5 years and younger MUST be accompanied by an adult)
5K Trail Run (Minimum age 11 years old)
10K Trail Run (Minimum age 15 years old)
UKA have various rules related to children running in competitive events on the track, trails and fells which generally have lower distances due to the competitive nature of the events. These bench marks have been considered when setting these age recommendations.
Can I run with my child?
We love to see children and families together, enjoying running non-competitively. As the parent, guardian or care giver you can use your discretion as to your child being suitable and able to take part in our runs. Please keep an eye on them, accompanying and remaining responsible for them at all times throughout the event.
Why not enter a family team in the 5K or 10K!
We encourage you to take part with your child in the Junior 1K if they are under 11 years old. If they are under 5 years old, you need to accompany them in this event. You can enter your child online for the 2024 junior event.
Can I run with my dog?
Unfortunately this is not permitted. Some of the trails are quite narrow and your pet may get in the way of other competitors some of which may be running at a fast pace. We will also pass areas where there will be livestock and dogs often cause alarm. Sorry.
Can I run with headphones?
We kindly ask you don't run with headphones as we need people to be aware of their surroundings and able to hear any instructions marshals may be giving you about traffic. We also want you to be able to hear fellow runners that might be giving you a warning signal if they need to pass.
Can I walk rather than run?
We are a running event and it is intended that runners take part. We definitely aren't expecting people to be super athletes or seasoned club runners, but we expect you to have a basic level of running fitness. If you want to walk the 5K course that's OK but please start behind the main field and give runners right of way if they need to pass you on narrow trails. There will be a cut-off time for everyone to finish the main event by 12.30.
MYPAS is a registered charity for Scotland's Kiltwalk. If you would love to raise funds for us and challenge yourself, please see their website for more information: https://www.thekiltwalk.co.uk/
What if I fall and get injured during the race?
We have made every effort in our risk assessment to ensure we have mitigated against potential risks and we will do a health and safety briefing before the race start. We will have marshals and first-aid stewards on the day who will be there to assist you in case you do get injured. If you get injured on a remote part of the course please inform a fellow runner to inform a marshal. We recommend you don't take part if you have an injury or are recently recovering from one.

Fundraising
Where does the money from my entry fee go?
We keep the cost of running the event as low as possible and our supporters help too. After paying for the resources needed to this event, such as insurance, Scottish Athletic levies, first aid and timing, the rest of your entry fee goes directly to helping MYPAS to continue providing valuable health and wellbeing services for vulnerable young people in East Lothian, Midlothian and the Borders.
Do I need to fundraise?
No. Your participation is already helping MYPAS and thank you for your support.
However, we would really appreciate any sponsorship collected as part of this challenge. Perhaps this is your first 5K or 10K trail run or you are running as a team or family and would like to set up a sponsorship page to support your challenge.
Collecting sponsorship is easy – just go to our Justgiving page to create your own event page.
